Ford revives an old project for the Mustang

We already know that in the short and medium term, the Ford Mustang will not switch to 100% electric technology. The oval brand has been hinting for some time that a hybrid version is possible, and now it may finally become a reality.

We have been hearing for a long time, years, about the possibility that the Ford Mustang, the most famous and iconic muscle car in history, would yield to electric technology. Pure electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid… many doubts and rumors since it was first announced back in 2017 by the previous management.

However, the brand's CEO, Jim Farley, ruled out last year that it would ever be 100% electric in the short and medium term, but opened the possibility for partial electrification. No, you and I know that the Mustang Mach-E has nothing to do with the muscle car model.

The Ford Mustang will finally yield to partial electrification.

Back then, eight years ago, it was announced that the Mustang would yield to hybrid technology. However, time passed, and although there was talk of hybrid versions in the EcoBoost and V8 engines that the vehicle mounted in the previous generation, the media Ford Authority warned that the project had been canceled.

Furthermore, the presentation of the seventh generation of the Ford Mustang in 2022 landed without any electrified version in the range. Now, the same media that announced the previous cancellation warns us that the oval brand has resumed testing again, and now it seems that it will become a reality.

What hybrid technology will the Mustang have?

Sources consulted by Ford Authority have revealed that Ford has already built prototypes to test a future hybrid Mustang. The project is internally known as S650E and will feature the 5.0-liter V8 gasoline engine from the current model. What is not known, however, is whether Ford will opt for a self-recharging hybrid technology or a plug-in hybrid.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E will be the only pure electric associated with the legendary Mustang name.

There are several clues that invite us to think that the project will become a reality sooner rather than later, although be careful, the restrictions that the Donald Trump government may impose in the United States could affect its development.

Ford has officially announced that in its plans for 2030, it was to continue betting on internal combustion engines, but adding some hybrid version to all models in its Ford Blue range, which also includes the Mustang.

As we mentioned earlier, Jim Farley opened the door for partial electrification to reach its famous muscle car, and also confirmed that the brand's sports department, Ford Racing, was conducting tests with hybrid propulsion systems: "They are ideal for high-performance drivers," he said last year.

Clear as day, right? It remains to be seen whether the tests on prototypes created based on the current generation of the Mustang, the seventh, will reach this delivery or the next. The eighth Mustang is not expected until 2030 at the earliest. In Europe, the arrival of a hybrid Mustang would make sense, where Euro 7 emissions will tighten by the end of this decade and an electrified option could save the model.
