Diesel engines still have a lot to say in the European automotive market, but the truth is that their registrations have plummeted in the last decade. What once boasted of covering the majority of sales in the new car market, so far this year represents only 5.6 percent.

However, diesel vehicles still represent the majority of the current vehicle fleet, specifically half; very aged, indeed. That’s why solutions like this one we are going to talk about can be not only good news to try to redirect the image of new diesels but also to improve the efficiency of current ones.

And we don’t have to go to another country to know about this innovation, but to the north of our country, specifically to Vilagarcía de Arousa, in Galicia. Kemegal, a small chemical company with just seven employees, has just launched Ecokem Additive.

An Additive That Revolutionizes Diesel

After almost six years of work and development by the R&D department of this Pontevedra SME, Ecokem Additive is now ready to hit the market. It is not just any product: it is an additive that promises to revolutionize the cleanliness and performance of medium and high-power diesel engines.

And these are not laboratory promises, but have been tested: this product reduces particulate emissions, soot, by 45 percent, reaching even 60 percent at low powers. Moreover, it reduces consumption by more than 3 percent.

External tests on cars, trucks, trains, ships, generators… were carried out by experts from the International Energy Agency and the Biosahe group from the University of Córdoba.

They were able to confirm the advantages of this product, which also reduces maintenance costs, requiring less use of AdBlue, and has a biocidal effect that eliminates the generation of sludge in the fuel tank, thus preventing the proliferation of microorganisms in the tanks.

“We have a tested product, endorsed by some of the leading experts in combustion engine operation and patented. There is no product that reduces this level of emissions on the market,” says Kemegal's director, Miguel Ángel García Miguéns, in statements reported by La Voz de Galicia.

The Galician chemical SME, founded in 2007, defines itself as a “chemical company specialized in the development of innovative products for different sectors, with the task of providing quality and environmentally friendly solutions.” Additionally, last year they received the “Innovative SME” seal from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.

After going through several bureaucratic processes, Kemegal has the green light to market its additive, for which they claim to already have contacts with large wholesale fuel companies.
