Toyota's cult engine returns to production after decades
Toyota has decided to follow the same line as German manufacturers, who greatly care for classic car owners. The Japanese are returning to produce a flagship engine, like the 4A-GE. The same one, but with significant improvements, that were used in the AE86, Celica, and Carina, and for which many are willing to pay.

Toyota knows that there is a significant number of owners worldwide who are willing to pay to find parts in the best possible condition for their classics. Even engines for old models, which are as unknown as references among enthusiasts and collectors. The Celica and Carina are two clear examples, but also others like the Corolla Levin.
This last one is a stylish compact sports car, also known as Sprinter Trueno or AE86. The first predecessor of the modern GR86 that has also been discontinued and is awaiting a successor that will not take long to arrive. But, returning to the mythical AE86, this is one of the cars that had one of the most appreciated gasoline engines with four cylinders in the world, and of which hardly any units remain in perfect condition.

The most sought-after Toyota engine in the world returns to production
More than enough reason for Toyota to have made the important decision to follow the same line as German brands, which have a section dedicated to classics. The Japanese have launched the GR Heritage Parts division, with a catalog that is gradually growing and already has more than 200 references of original parts for eight models.
These are being manufactured again, but with today's technology. Among them, this 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that powered the Celica, Carina, and AE86, and of which they have shown both the engine block and the 4A-GE cylinder head.

The manufacturer has pointed out that "To help ensure continuous and enjoyable use of the beloved cars in the best possible conditions for the coming years, these two GR Heritage parts, which retain their basic design and original specifications." Interesting statements, from which it can be inferred that it will not be cheap.
Toyota engineers have confirmed that modifications have been made to the cylinder block so that this transverse engine can not only be mounted in the AE86 but also in other front-wheel-drive cars. The original engine was born in 1983 for this sports car, in addition to the other two mentioned above.
Equipped with a 16-valve head, it remained in production until 1991 and reached a maximum power of 140 HP. The Japanese launched a version with 20 valves, which extended until the year 2000, and increased power output to 165 HP. The same figure as the previous one but with a supercharger.
