“It was the easiest weekend ever to score,” Albon's reaction after Sainz's podium
Carlos Sainz achieved the best result for Williams in over four years in Baku. The Spanish driver finished third in a very complicated weekend where Alex Albon ended up nearly a minute behind his teammate.

The immense joy for Carlos Sainz's podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix made Alexander Albon's bad weekend seem like a footnote. However, this once again highlighted the difficulties the British team is having in completing a perfect weekend with both drivers.
In any case, it is indeed news that Carlos Sainz is the architect of the great result of the weekend, as the Spanish driver has barely been able to translate a speed he has demonstrated abundantly throughout the season into points.
In fact, the Madrid driver scored 18 points in Baku, surpassing the mere 16 he had accumulated in the previous 16 Grand Prix.
“It's great for the constructors' championship what Carlos has done”
Albon does not hide his frustration
Alexander Albon had a very different weekend than Carlos Sainz in Baku. Starting from the back of the grid, he also couldn't avoid problems and mistakes, even being penalized.
A result that has not satisfied the Thai driver at all, who also believes that Baku has been one of the most favorable circuits for Williams this season.
“The car was fast,” admits Albon. “I’m frustrated with myself because I didn’t score points this weekend. Maybe it was the easiest weekend ever to score points. But these things happen sometimes.”
“I think we were one of the only cars that could get away with overtaking in the DRS trains,” adds Carlos Sainz's teammate, who had to fight with the midfield group. “We had the pace to do it. Obviously, we were fast.”
“Many of the midfield cars reacted to my pit entry and tried to cover me immediately. So we fought a bit with Franco [Colapinto], but it was my fault,” he adds regarding the incident that earned him a penalty.
Sainz deserved it
The consolation for Williams is that Carlos Sainz achieved the first podium of the season and since George Russell also did so in Belgium 2021. Something that has pleased Alexander Albon.
“I’m very happy for Carlos. I think he had a very solid weekend from qualifying to the race. He stayed away from mistakes, which in this weather and these conditions was not easy at all,” he acknowledges.

“It’s great for the constructors' championship what Carlos has done. And great for him too. I think he has always been extremely fast, but he has just had bad luck. This is good to shake it off. Very well done by him,” concludes Alex Albon.
After this great result from Carlos Sainz, Williams increases its points lead over Racing Bulls and Aston Martin, who are now 29 and 39 points behind, respectively.
