Whenever there is a regulation change in Formula 1, the anticipation is high regarding how it may affect the competition and the status of each team on the grid. But this time it is even greater than usual looking ahead to 2026, as the transformation that the category will undergo will be massive.

The complexity of the new single-seaters —which will bring a new aerodynamic concept, be lighter and smaller, have smaller tires, and feature new engines and fuels— anticipates a change in hierarchy in the competition. And Aston Martin is one of the strongest contenders to take the place of the current leading teams.

"With the current regulations, the disadvantage with the favorites is excessive, and the energy and effort needed to overcome it are too much"

Not in vain, the Silverstone team has been spectacularly reinforced at all levels, building a unparalleled Technology Campus in Formula 1 and hiring proven geniuses like Andy Cowell and Adrian Newey. Now it only remains to meet the objectives, which are extremely ambitious.

Alonso sees everything in its place

At Aston Martin, there is a conviction that Lawrence Stroll's dream of having the best team in Formula 1 will be fulfilled sooner rather than later. In fact, Fernando Alonso assures that the team will be champion for sure, although he cannot predict when it will be.

"I hope so. I mean, I am quite convinced of that. The only thing is when", says the two-time Formula 1 world champion. "That is probably my only question mark about this project. In my case, in the last years of my career, I obviously want to savor the success of the Aston Martin project. But I know it takes a little time to put all the pieces together".

"Aston Martin fighting and winning the World Championship is more or less guaranteed in the future," adds Fernando Alonso, who already sees the team ready to be very competitive in 2026. "We have everything we need to fight for it. Then, to make it a reality, you also need some external factors: a bit of help from competitors, a bit of luck, executing well every weekend. But let's say that, in preparation for 2026, we have everything ready".

Fernando Alonso knows that 2025 matters little, the moment of truth arrives in a few months.

It is clear that Aston Martin, except for the first third of that surprising 2023, has not yet proven to be a team capable of winning races. But Fernando Alonso believes that the regulatory change offers a real "opportunity" to a team that has grown a lot in the last two years.

"With the current regulations, the disadvantage with the favorites is excessive, and the energy and effort needed to overcome it are too much. I see 2026 as an opportunity". Everything will restart in some way, and then it will depend on us to do a better job than the others," concludes Fernando Alonso.
