Verstappen is asked about the best F1 driver in six areas… and Alonso excels

Max Verstappen is, for many, the best driver currently. Not only that, but also one of the greats in history at just 27 years old and already with four world titles to his name.

But that doesn't stop the Dutch driver from having role models in the competition. And Fernando Alonso is clearly the main one. And now that Max Verstappen doesn't have enough weapons to beat McLaren in the fight for the World Championship, he feels somewhat identified.

"In that sense, I suppose he is the same as Fernando Alonso. He doesn't have a car to win the championship, but he never gives up. He is always a fighter and that is something I admire about him. He is 44 years old and still very motivated, very driven by what he does," says Max Verstappen.

"He continues with maximum passion, even when things are not going well. And that, for me, shows that he is a true fighter. I hope to be able to do the same for a long time. Always wanting more, always trying to bring out the best in myself," acknowledges the Red Bull driver.

Verstappen vs. Alonso in 2026

Next season, with the arrival of the new regulations, the grid will reset and the hierarchical order could change substantially. Could we have a title duel between Verstappen and Alonso?

"I hope so! Fighting for a World Championship against Alonso would be fantastic. I have a lot of respect for Fernando because he is a great champion. I would love it, but right now it is very difficult to know how F1 will be in 2026," responds Verstappen.

The Dutchman knows that it would be a very tough rivalry if that situation arises, and he also believes that Alonso deserves more titles than he has. "Yes. Fernando could have won much more than he has, that is for sure. He could have won much more if he had been in the right team at the right time."

The best Formula 1 driver

Fabio Marchi, the journalist who interviewed Fernando Alonso, ended it with a quick questionnaire to determine the best driver in six areas. And the truth is that, once again, Max Verstappen showed his preference for the Aston Martin driver.

"Uf, it's difficult, but I think currently… I have always considered Charles Leclerc a very good qualifying driver", Verstappen responded first when asked about the best on the grid for a lap, and of course, without considering himself.

Now, when it comes to the aspects that define the best on Sundays, the Asturian immediately comes to light. "I have always liked, even in the past, watching Fernando in the race. He is a true fighter. I really like that.

Furthermore, the Red Bull driver considers Alonso the most intelligent in the race. "Intelligence? I would always lean towards experience. No, I am not going to name myself in any of this… so, I would choose Fernando Alonso for his experience".

Finally, Verstappen must choose the best in three aspects: overtaking, defending, and competitive mentality. And Alonso again takes two out of three. "Charles Leclerc is also good at overtaking. In defense? Fernando! He is brilliant in defense. Competitive mentality? Fernando Alonso, without a doubt!" concludes the four-time world champion.
